Urgent call from the organizers of the Canadian Human Rights resolution against Iran

To the attention of the respectful Canadian government authorities and those in charge of the compilation of resolution number A/C.3/69.1.33

While thanking you for the particular attention you are paying to the human rights catastrophe taking place in Iran, the following distinct criticism is being presented with regards to the content of the said resolution:

In the draft of this resolution which was approved in November by the third committee of the General Assembly of the United Nations organization, and will be presented for voting to the General Assembly of the United Nations organization in December, profound concerns have been expressed regarding serious and continuous violations of human rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran, in which torture, violent punishments and actions, and since the presidential elections of 2009, widespread and serious restrictions with regards to the freedom of peaceful assembly and gathering, freedom of speech and thought, the continuation of constant house arrests of leading opposition figures - despite serious concerns with regards to their health, as well as other stated issues, showing that in the preparation of the draft, all published reports in international organizations and Iranian institutions in defense of Human Rights have been investigated and taken into account, and hence this action should be commended; however a very important issue has remained absent, and that is the fundamental issue of interference of religion and politics, which was not mentioned at all!

We hereby wish to attract your attention to the three following important points:
1- Without any doubt one can officially recognize the subject of “ separation of religion from politics” as a separate title with regards to the immense catastrophic human rights report card of the Islamic Republic of Iran, because since more than 8 years, a well-known religious leader called Ayatollah Seyed Hossein Kazemeini Boroujerdi, has been subjected to continuous imprisonment and physical and psychological tortures, merely because he has publicly highlighted the vital importance of all the Iranian people. Based on published documents in the Human Rights defense organizations, a few samples of which are attached at the end of this letter, Ayatollah Boroujerdi is asking for a free referendum to be organized in order to determine the type of government in Iran, and to eliminate laws, violent and merciless punishments and actions, all of which have been defined within the framework of religious laws in Iran.

The authoritarian principle of the "guardianship of Islamic jurists” (Vilayat Faqih)" is guaranteed in the constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and provides the Iranian leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, with full authority in all affairs of the state; it is based on the theorization of interference of religion and politics, and in short, the core of all instances of violation of the rights of Iranian people, and the nurturing of terrorism and war mongering, orchestrated by the officials of the regime, are without exception religious excuses!
2- The slogan: "our religion is exactly like our politics, and our politics is exactly like our religion” was the well-known statement of the founders of the Iranian Revolution, and with this reasoning, they based the ordinance of unjust discriminatory rules such as gender, religious, ethnic, ideological discriminations, and implementation of cruel punishments like imprisonment, lashing, execution, stoning, and… and completely based their reasoning on religious laws, claiming that they were derived from Islamic laws and the Shiite religion, and in order to justify the suffocating atmosphere and the confinement of writing and speech, and in view of institutionalizing the suppression of civil protests, they resorted to religious and spiritual pretexts, and this trend has been maintained and reinforced in various forms until now.
3- During 36 years from the time the rule of the Islamic jurists was established, great reformist figures, with the support of millions of oppressed Iranians, have stepped up in order to fight against such a structure, but due to the inflexibility of the rule of the Islamic jurists, and the complexities arising from the interference of religion and politics, they have not been able to take effective steps, and as a result the widespread violation of human rights, and the creation of crisis at an international level, are still among the most prominent indicators of the regime of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Most reformist factions within Iran, have not paid sufficient attention to the importance of the fundamental desire of the nation based on “the separation of religion from politics”, and perhaps they were not firm believers of this concept, therefore the inalienable right for the separation of religion from politics, as a comprehensive and profound remedy, did not receive as much attention as it should have, and non-recurring opportunities in view of changing the authoritarian structure of the religious regime were lost in this land!
With thanks
The representatives of Mr. Kazemeyni Boroujerdi inside and outside of Iran
